I released two new tutorials on how to make tiling textures “by hand”. The idea for these arose from a Twitter thread where we were talking about how some things are “impossible” to achieve with procedural solutions.

The first tutorial can be watched for free on my Youtube channel, and covers the basics of the workflow:

The second tutorial, I take the same workflow and make a complete roof texture, showing many techniques I use all the time. Some of the things covered are:

  • How to mix bakes, photos and hand-painted details to achieve a semi-realistic/stylized look.
  • Hand-painting normal map gradients to enhance the shapes on a material.
  • How to quickly achieve correct angle variation in individual tiles, something I found extremely hard to achieve properly in SD. (Since the data in SD is 2D, you can only fake this effect).
  • And more.
